Commentary

I APOLOGIZE
This poem took on a silly, maudlin tone as I forced the rhyme pattern. That’s unfortunate. The inspiration was serious contemplation of how slowly I conform to new ways of thinking. The picture I meant to develop was of sharp granite being smoothed by running water after leaving its “birthplace.”

Here’s a case in point…. The more I write poetry, the more I realize I have tended to interpret Scripture with wooden-headed literalism. I wish to be more thoroughly poetic in my reading, as in my writing. But—and here’s my main point—I recognize that the necessary mental transformation is inevitably slow. So, I must be patient with myself.
