On a Summer’s Evening Walk

Commentary

For some reason, I remember the missionary lady rebuking eight year old Bradley for exclaiming, “Man alive!“ Something about blasphemy and the Resurrection. But my own parents—who looked forward to the Resurrection more than most—never objected. This poem captures the sequence I observed on my evening walk. Gray goes to black…and then a new day!

The play of verbs and prepositions in the third stanza was reminding me of something. Turns out it’s Frost in “Nothing Gold Can Stay.”
